(Eddie exhales loudly and rubs his temple, shutting his eyes. It was complicated. A lot more complicated than anyone realized.)
I've told him before. (No, actually, Richie had seen it before. Eddie holds both his palms up for Stan to see. They had their star bursts of scars, a lot more than Stan would remember him ever having.)
About two and a half years ago. He knew. And we made a blood pact to never leave each other behind. (His fingers curl and drop into his lap. He stares blankly down at the table.)
Then he left me behind. And when he came back, he didn't remember any of that and was weird with me. Then he left again. And then came back again, and then left again. I've been dealing with him acting like a tidal wave for the past three years.
(It was more draining than anyone could possibly know.)
I want to be honest with him. But I don't want to emotionally torture him only to have him vanish the next day.
(He holds up his hand again and wiggles his fingers. There's a ring sitting on his ring finger.)
He gave this to me on my birthday just now to be like a promise that we'll come back to each other. But. (Eddie glances down, twisting the ring around and around on his finger.) Shit. You know me, Stan. I'm a coward. I'm always afraid. This is no different. And for the record? Stuff didn't spin out for me. I'm from the 1950s- weird, I know, but we never had whatever weird fight you guys had.
