SEPTEMBER 2019 TEST DRIVE MEME
SEPTEMBER 2019 TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to September's Test Drive Meme! This month's Test Drive's theme is: CHAOS.
All Test Drive Memes contain at least one clue to the Deerington's upcoming in-game events for the month! Keep your eyes peeled! But...not literally.
Characters may die during TDMs, but you do not need to count it towards a game-canonical death unless you want to. Consider it a freebie. All TDMs can be considered game canon as TDMs introduce minor aspects about the world of Deerington that can be revisited by characters later on in the game. You may also use TDMs for your application writing sample as well as AC.
CW: Torture (emotional and possibly physical), claustrophobia, potential weapon violence (guns, knives, spears, flamethrowers, etc.), possible body horror, emotional manipulation, emojis
Don't forget to tag content whenever necessary. Have fun!
DICE BLOCK

But you aren't alone! With you are other unfortunate souls who hopefully weren't just looking for a quick bathroom break. Some of them might look a little worse for wear. What happened? Well, looks like you may have to ask later, because you'll only really have time to exchange names if you don't already know one another before a large screen you didn't notice was hanging from the ceiling will light up. There's a giant image of a typical six-sided game die that's completely stationary. For the moment. Shortly after, a voice will come on over the speakers, echoing in the otherwise fairly empty room. It's overly cheerful, grating, and giggles at the end of every sentence.
Would you like to hear the rules?
Okay!
Each player will take a turn rolling their die.
You can then move the number of spaces shown — but only those spaces!
You can move forward, backward, right, and left, but not diagonally!
Each space will have a symbol.
The spaces with a clover are lucky spaces! Congratulations! You'll gain some fortune, whether it's an extra turn, moving ahead more spaces, or gaining an important item you can take with you on your journey!
The spaces with the skull are unlucky spaces! Boooooo, that's too bad! You'll befall some grave misfortune here. Hopefully it won't set you back too badly! Make sure to avoid these at all costs!
The spaces with a chest are item spaces! Here you'll be able to win prizes, like medical supplies or weapons! Maybe even a small something from home! Wouldn't that be nice?
Your goal is to make it to the end alive! Good luck! And remember to have lots of fun!
The first player's name will pop up on the screen, before the die will begin to randomly blink between numbers. Eventually it will land on a number. Once the player moves forward and lands on their space, it will repeat for the second player. This will go on until one (or both players) reach the end!
When they said to make sure to not land on an unlucky space, they certainly weren't kidding. Each one seems to come with some sort of random punishment or horror; it can be as light as having to move back a few spaces or go back to the start, or as heavy as breaking a random bone or feeling a blade slice open your skin. Maybe you'll start to slowly turn into a monster or become filled with the desire to kill your opponent. Anything can happen, but it's always going to be bad.
Players who reach the end will be able to go through the door and end up back wherever it was they were intending to go in the first place. Players who lose? Well... It's back to the beginning for you. Time to wait for the next player. Better luck next time.
DANCE DANCE

Two players only, and you'll have to work together! It's a team dance and you'll want to encourage each other to stay perfectly in sync. The doors won't open until you finish, and should you mess up? Well, look up, friend!
The ceiling is covered in sharp, painful looking spikes and every time someone misses a beat or steps on the wrong arrow, the ceiling will drop down a foot. It's pretty high up there, but miss more than three arrows and you're gonna start to really feel the pressure. The spikes are looking a lot bigger and more ominous than they did when they were all the way at the top. Hopefully you've got some good rhythm.
But this is a good lesson in teamwork! Even the worst dancers might be able to get out of here okay if they've got someone who they can work together with. Maybe their perfect scores will make up for your two left feet. You can only hope you're both so lucky.
THAT'S NOT A "MEH" FACE!

The message you've gotten is pretty simple though! Each person has received a text message with one emoji inside. No rhyme or reason applied! That's... random, isn't it? You can try to text back, but no one will answer, and so you might as well just close your device and forget about it.
Every person who received a text will find that their personality starts to shift. They begin to take on some aspect that's tied to the emoji they received. Did you get a simple smiley face? You're happy and relaxed for the time being! Or maybe a silly face will lead you to become more of a prankster. An eggplant could have someone feeling like sexting a Special Someone. An angry face might get you really riled up, even towards people you love. Did you get a knife? Time to start stabbing. A gun? Those people around you look like really good target practice...
The options are endless. Each emojis effects will last for twenty-four hours or until another emoji is sent from the same user.
Character Arrival
You can read how all characters arrive in Deerington here. There is not a collective "all these characters showed up at the exact same moment" occurrence in Deerington. Since characters fall asleep, die, or pass out at various times throughout all their worlds, it wouldn't make too much sense if they arrived in game all at the exact same time. There should be some discrepancy between character arrival, whether by a couple minutes, hours, or even days up to a week.
The players are entirely in control of how/when they want to play their characters arriving in Deerington. For TDMs, you can play it like your character has just arrived and that can be maintained as your game canon, or you can wait until game events for that moment. Or you don't need to acknowledge it at all. The flexibility for character allows a bit more of an organic feel to the character arrival situation, so please play it to whatever feels right for you.
If you are interested in having an "arrival" introduction for one of your TDM prompts, you are more than welcome to explore that option.
Vanitas | Kingdom Hearts
[It’s an understatement to say this isn’t where Vanitas expected to be. After making his choice he expected to fade away into darkness or maybe even end up in the realm of darkness or even stop existing. There were a number of outcomes to that really but deerington shouldn’t of been one of them.
He feels...alive and that’s not what he really wants to feel. He’s furious that his choice has been taken and twisted to make him appear in this world. He snarls and pulls his helmet off, throwing it violently across the room and shattering the already damaged glass-like surface of it. Unversed should be spilling out of him in masses but no more than a handful appear. It's strange.. He hates the creatures but even that is strange on its own. They have enough sense to dart away from their , staying out of his path as he trashes the room.
It’s a good hour or so after that he’s outside and stepping out to explore the world. He’s collected his thoughts enough and biten down some control that hes briskly walking through the town with his fists clenched tightly at his side. His unversed are being strange and he's have issues even summoning his keyblade let alone making a dark corridor out of here.
Vanitas still can’t make sense of what has happened to him. His heart is already telling him his other half is here along with a faint pulling from another source of light he’d easily guess to be Sora. There’s...someone else but he ignores it. He’s not interested in them.
His pair of floods dart of quickly per Vanitas’ wishes to scout out and find out what this place is. He just wants to leave. Though he’s focused on that, he’s not really paying attention to where he’s going so anyone he passes will practically get his shoulder rammed into their own to get out of his way.]
Watch it.
[Dance Dance]
[Vanitas somehow isn’t surprised. What little time he’s had in this place, especially after the dice board game, has made him believe this place is just out to mess with them.
He does check the doors, testing them in some vain hope that maybe one didn’t shut properly and he can just slip out and leave his new teammate here.
No such luck.
He exhales and looks up at the spike covered ceiling and then over to the other unlucky person. They don’t really have a choice here....]
This is a really stupid way to die so you better not have two left feet.
[Its not even really dancing...just following arrows so it can’t be that difficult, right?]
[Wildcard]
((go for it, anything goes.
Arrival
Ventus has felt a familiar tugging on his heart that he hasn't felt since he's awakened after his decade long slumber. It was the kind of tugging that made him stop, a kind of chill going down his spine. After everything, he's not sure if they should meet, but at the same time--
In a really weird way, he's missed him.
The Floods catches his attention, but he doesn't bother with them. Instead, he focuses on that feeling, walking to where his heart is leading him. But he becomes so lost in his thoughts that he doesn't pay attention to where he's going and he stumbles back a bit. Looking up, his one good eye widens while his injured eye hides behind bandages.]
Vanitas.
no subject
It always beats loud around Ventus. Longing to be united with the light only to always be denied. It beats in his ears making it hard to hear anything else and his shoulder visibly tense]
Ventus.
[There's silence between them.
Then the next second Vanitas spins around and reaches out to try and grab Ventus by the throat]
no subject
WHAT THE HELL.
Ventus grunts as he's grabbed by the throat, but a knife is soon placed against Vanitas' throat, too. He's kept the knife since he left the Dome and it felt a bit more reassuring to depend on that then his own Keyblade at the moment.
He grits his teeth.]
What do you think you're doing?
no subject
Oh. That's different. Sweet little Venty-Wenty using knives now? A keyblade he'd expect but not a blade like that. Still, His eyes don't move from Ventus' face.
His thumb does slide a bit, pressing more against the side of his neck as if trying to stroke against his windpipe.]
What happened to you?
no subject
[He eyes him warily.
Sora told him not to let this world change his heart, but it's hard to ignore the bit of darkness that managed to creep inside from what happened in the Dome.]
no subject
[He reaches out with his other hand to press his finger against the bandage. He doesn't push hard but enough to feel nothing is really there]
If you weren't so weak maybe you'd still have it.
[Ventus has gotten stronger, at least stronger then their first run ins but there's always been something gentle about his light. But here, it feels different.
The next moment he shoves Ventus away as if disgusted with him]
no subject
But he staggers back in surprise when he's shoved away, blinking a few times. He eyes Vanitas for a moment before finally seeming to decide on something and he puts his knife away.]
When did you get here?
no subject
[It's been less than an hour, Vanitas knows that much.]
I decided for myself and then I ended up in this stupid world. That's it.
[But...it doesn't add up. If that wasn't that long ago then why does Ventus seem so use to this place? He's missing something.]

Arrival
But he knows it's Vanitas. He's seen this boy through Sora.
This damn world was really trying to get to him. Narrowing his eyes, he huffs at the black haired youth.]
You're the one who ran into me.
no subject
Their connection isn't gone and he feels something different from this one. Very faint, if there at all. It makes him wonder if maybe he's just losing it. But this isn't Ventus. Just a lookalike....a nobody.
Vanitas has never met Roxas before but he knows vaguely of him from talk in the organization. A nobody with Ventus' face. Someone Xemnes was interested in that could be a guardian of light. The details were vague since Vanitas never bothered to ask questions and only eavesdropped here and there.
Still....seeing him in the flesh is something else. He sneers at Roxas]
Doesn't change anything. Not with the face you have.
no subject
Says the one who stole Sora's face.
[Two can play at that game.]
What the hell are you doing here?!
no subject
[The corner of his lips pull into a slight smirk. Look, his circumstance is different then yours Roxas so shut up.
Instead of answering Roxas, he starts walking again.]
no subject
[He's not Ventus! How many times does he have to prove it? Certainly can't take Ven's other eye... Vanitas walking away just makes a well of irritation spring up.
Vanitas won't be going too far as a Samurai Nobody steps out in front of the other, hand on the hilt of its blade.]
If you're here, then that means you can't just leave when someone talks to you.
no subject
Oh, did I hit a nerve? You're not Ventus and you're not Sora, so what do you matter? I have nothing to say to a nobody like you.
no subject
[He pats his chest and huffs.] I'm human now. Something you'll never get to be because you're an idiot.
[It's been a stressful few months. And Vanitas is convenient for letting anger out on.]
no subject
Whoever said I wanted to be human? I don't have the same simple desires you do.
[He'll never get what he wants but being human isn't it. He just wanted to be whole.]

Dance Dance
I've almost died in dumber ways, but now's not the time for that. Just stick to beginner and we'll be fine.
[She is not sticking to beginner.]
no subject
Don't be over confident.
[Either shes stupid or she knows what she's doing. In this case, Vanitas is going to assume the later or this is going to get ugly quick. His pride makes him want to select the same as her but he's also not familiar with the game at all. One quick glance at the spikes and he just selects and lets the menu move to the song.]
no subject
Whatever. At least I know what I'm doing.
[Just going to set the song selector to random and- Why this song. Pidge cringes inwardly a bit as the song starts playing.]
This is so retro...
no subject
If it's your favorite song you don't have to be ashamed of it.
[He chuckles a bit as the game loads. The instructions said to just match the arrows so that doesn't seem too hard.]
no subject
[And Pidge is not a masochist.
Vanitas will find this quite simple with beginner mode. Pidge on the other hand is bouncing around quite a bit. Doing her best not to miss any arrows.]
I forgot this song needed a lot of jumping...
no subject
He has no intention of wanting to die but he does miss an arrow and look up to see the spikes drop down just enough to be at much closer to their heads with a loud screech as its lowered.
At least one arrow missed isn't an instant game over.]
no subject
Don't do that again. This place doesn't mess around when it comes to punishments!
no subject
You sound experienced.
[Luckily for Pidge, Vanitas doesn't feel like dying today. At least not this way so he does actually try not to screw up on anymore arrows. Pidge seems like someone that would be fun to see squirm but he's not interested in joining her in being smashed by spikes.
The song isn't that hard on beginner luckily and even though Vanitas has never played he has enough coordination to do well.]
