SEPTEMBER 2020 TEST DRIVE MEME

SEPTEMBER 2020 TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to September's Test Drive Meme! This month's Test Drive's theme is: CHILDREN/YOUNG ADULT HORROR.

All Test Drive Memes contain at least one clue to the Deerington's upcoming in-game events for the month! Keep your eyes peeled! But...not literally.

Characters may die during TDMs, but you do not need to count it towards a game-canonical death unless you want to. Consider it a freebie. All TDMs can be considered game canon as TDMs introduce minor aspects about the world of Deerington that can be revisited by characters later on in the game. You may also use TDMs for your application writing sample as well as AC.

CW: Evil dollhouses, potential body horror (turning into a doll), heights, pranks with the potential to cause harm, some stalking vibes
Don't forget to tag content whenever necessary. Have fun!

THE EVIL DOLLHOUSE

When you wake up, you find you're not in your own bed, your own room, or even your own house. The room is well decorated, almost Victorian in fashion. The bed is pretty uncomfortable and you're not even sure the mattress is a real mattress. The chairs look like they might be made of plastic and the doors are flimsy. But it might not be what catches your eye, especially if you look out the window.

Through the clear panes (which also seem to be plastic), you will notice you do not see the town of Deerington, or even the outdoors at all. You see a living room that feels larger than life. There aren't any people in it, but as you look around at the fake looking furnishings and the strange view, you might be hit with a realization: you're inside a dollhouse.

The dollhouse has three floors for those who explore; the second floor you woke up on has two bedrooms and a fake little bathroom, all decorated in the same Victorian dollhouse style as the room you originally found yourself in. The bottom floor has a cute little kitchen with small porcelain dolls sitting around the table, a living room with all the basic furniture one would expect to find (in fact, it looks a great deal like the living room outside the windows), and an office filled with books that can't actually be pulled out of the shelves. On the very top floor is an attic. It's dusty and filled with broken toy beds and chairs, a few shattered doll pieces, and on the far wall you'll see another bookshelf. All seems... fairly standard, really, if you're used to seeing dollhouses.

But what there doesn't appear to be is an exit.

While searching, you may run into another Sleeper. A friend or a stranger, it's clear you're both stuck here together. And the longer the time ticks by, the more concerning things get. You might not notice at first, but anyone inside the dollhouse starts slowly... changing.
It seems to go at a different pace for everyone, but the results are always the same. Your skin will start to become porcelain, your cheeks more rosy, your clothes made of cheaper cloth material, your joints become stiffer, and your eyes will start to become more and more glass like. If you don't get out of the dollhouse soon, it's clear that you may become the next doll at the kitchen table.

Searching the house again may feel fruitless, but keen observers may find light scratches on the floor in front of the bookshelf in the attic. Maybe they were like that because of someone moving things around or maybe there's a reason. If you decide to eventually pull the bookshelf aside, there will be a large door in the wall. It may seem strange, given that the wall only leads to the outside, but it's the only door to the outside that actually opens. You expect it to open up into the living room, but instead you'll see the grass of the park below. Far below. It's likely you could get hurt jumping, especially if you've started to turn to porcelain, but what other choice do you have?

Once characters take the plunge, they will find that they land rather softly in the grass, despite how high the jump may have seemed. As soon as you are out of the dollhouse, your body will have returned to complete normal.

And the house with the dollhouse in the living room will be nowhere in sight.

THOSE PESKY KIDS

You start off thinking maybe you're just forgetful and moved minor pieces around in your house without paying attention. You might think you're just seeing strange things out of the corner of your eye, because why wouldn't you? It's Deerington. Things are always strange. But each day, there's something weirder going on. Small objects might turn into entire rooms being rearranged, strange sightings out of the corner of your eye might turn into you swearing you saw a lake monster running through the street, and you swear you can hear the rattling of chains or the sounds of someone telling you to leave echoing in your house at night or following you down the street.

A haunting seems plausible. It wouldn't be the first time in Deerington. But no amount of herbs burned, or exorcisms performed, or chants and spell cast will make these things go away. In fact, they seem to just becoming more and more frequent, and more and more intense. Eventually, the strange creatures you see running around may start to try and attack you. They may start to try and kill you. But they always run off before you can attack back or show yourself to be stronger than them. It's probably the first time the monsters have ever been so easily scared.

Anyone who looks into it further may start to find weird clues lying around after a monster has been chased off. Footprints that don't look quite monster-like, tapes or records that when played will make strange rattling sounds like the chains you've been hearing, a piece of rubber that looks a lot like the monsters skin... Huh. The more you follow the clues, the more they'll lead you towards the answer to your dilemmas; these aren't hauntings.

They're pranks.

People can work together to catch a monster or ghost (or killing it, if you decide to); catching them will lead to them getting quite flustered and angry, struggling to get away. Pull off the mask or the sheet and underneath you'll find... a very disgruntled townsperson. Maybe your business was taking too much money away from theirs and they were hoping you'd close down with enough scares, maybe you talked back to them one time and they were looking for revenge, maybe you ruined their house or garden when you were fighting the things in Deerington that actually try to kill you, or maybe they were just having some "harmless" fun; they all have a different excuse, but they're clearly angry about getting caught.

They woulda gotten away with it if it weren't for you pesky Sleepers, after all.

Character Arrival

You can read how all characters arrive in Deerington here.

There is not a collective "all these characters showed up at the exact same moment" occurrence in Deerington. Since characters fall asleep, die, or pass out at various times throughout all their worlds, it wouldn't make too much sense if they arrived in game all at the exact same time. There should be some discrepancy between character arrival, whether by a couple minutes, hours, or even days up to a week.

The players are entirely in control of how/when they want to play their characters arriving in Deerington. For TDMs, you can play it like your character has just arrived and that can be maintained as your game canon, or you can wait until game events for that moment. Or you don't need to acknowledge it at all. The flexibility for character allows a bit more of an organic feel to the character arrival situation, so please play it to whatever feels right for you.

If you are interested in having an "arrival" introduction for one of your TDM prompts, you are more than welcome to explore that option.

Yeah. [ Korra is grateful for the change of topic too. She smiles at Gar ] Mako. One of my best friends. He got here just before me.

Do you know anyone here? From back home?

Of course. Please take care.

[ In a sense, all he's managed to do is circle them around to the beginning. The store and its endangered supplies included. Ah well. Isn't it worth a little unnecessary time and effort for the opportunity to meet a fellow sleeper? ]

And good luck.

Jean-Paul looks at Neal sharply, then stares at him intently, as if searching for something. "Do you have D.I.D?" he asks.

[Oh, six fingers. That's different for a human! Not so different that it merits commentary, though, especially given the current circumstances; plus, Michael's first thought is "ew, even more joints" and he knows that's rude.]

Yeah, stuff like this just kinda happens around here. As things go, it's not that bad. At least the dolls aren't up and trying to kill us, right?

[ha]

The month I arrived was cult sacrifice month, so I'd say you're doing okay.

The question takes Neal by surprise, but filtering back through his little impromptu lesson, he can see why Jean-Paul may have come to that conclusion. He almost wants to laugh, but something about that sharp gaze keeps him from doing so, ever present as he is about observation and reading the room.

"No, no," he says quietly, shaking his head. "I didn't meant to give that impression. They were aliases."

Jean-Paul holds the door for David as he weighs the pros and cons of honesty versus dismissal. "The guy who runs the barbershop, the guy who runs the pawnshop, a priest and a park ranger," he decides upon.

[He doesn't mean to sneak up on him by any means but it could be misconstrued to be as such as he comes up to also explore the bookshelf. The transformation appears to be going rather slowly for him but by this point he has lost movement of his left arm all the way to the elbow and there are some flecks on his face that appear to be way too smooth to still be human skin.]

Did you find something? [Hopefully something that isn't just more doom.]

[ooc: happy to switch between styles]

The Evil Dollhouse
When Snow woke, he actually spent quite some time just sitting up in the hard plastic bed, running his gloved hands over it like he was trying to figure out just what he had woken up on. It was a few more minutes before he takes a deep breath and wanders over to the window, giving it a light tap with his knuckles.

Definitely weird.

By the time he wanders out of the room and down the first flight of stairs, his left hand is starting to feel a bit stiff and if he looked down, he would notice that there is a light sheen there that definitely doesn't look like skin.

"Is anybody else here...?" He's cautious but quietly hopeful that somebody else is around that already has some answers.

Arrival
[He's just left the random house he woke up in but there appears to be a perpetual look of confusion mixed with a hint of frustration plastered all over his face. He has his mobile phone in his hand but nothing appears to be connecting. Sure it didn't look like home but how far from home could he be and how the heck did he get here?

He wanders further down the path continually staring down at his phone in the hopes that he could reach his brother at some point.]

[As the mask was pulled and the squirming townsperson glared angrily up at Franciscus, there was a nearby yowl, and a familiar form approached shortly after the sound of a pokeball opening. Sharona bounded over and let out another yowling sound, smiling in that distant sort of Absol way at the great Archeops.

Its master wasn't far behind. Vira-Lorr was smiling as she walked, eyebrow raised. she had a ram-rod stiff posture these days and was dressed in a cheongsam that hugged her form, topped with a high-collared black lace mantle that concealed the brace around her neck and shoulders, coming up almost to the chin at its height. She smiled more warmly, eyes twinkling.

"I thought I recognized your companion, Franciscus. It is good to see you," she said before regarding the native. "Ah, I assume the locals are giving us trouble again? Lovely. can't be too hard on them. The cats wouldn't approve."

[A little hesitancy never hurt anyone in her view. There was too much to be uncertain of here, and these days it gave her leave to walk a tiny bit slower, which suited her just fine. Internally she reminded herself that she'd probably need to have some of the coffee with him, which would be ... fun. she could not wait for the day that her taste buds worked right again.]

My memories of home are fuzzy. They've only recently begun to come back, but from the little I know... I believe that I would find comfort in their presence here, but would not wish this place on any but my worst enemies. It is not a pleasant place many dyas.

I take it that you have little love lost between you and yours? [A pause as she neared the door and held it for him.] You do not need to share if you'd rather not, of course. I confess I am a bit of a chatty sort.

I'm glad you have someone that important here with you. [He says with a fond smile. What he wouldn't give to have his sister or one of his best friends around here too!]

I... do know some people here, but they don't exactly know me. I think we're all from different versions of the same place, or different times. It's reak confusing.

He slips through the door and glances over his shoulder at Jean-Paul, a briefly judgmental look on his face. But it's not the number. It's the evasion.

"You know that if you don't tell me names, then I might well slip up before learning what the people do, JP. We're a team. We don't judge each other. Well..."

He offers a warm smile.

"Maybe we judge Daken."

"I see." He doesn't, really, but he's certain he will come to understand in time. Whether he'd like to or not. It is clear enough that this place has magic unlike anything he's encountered, and that in itself is... deeply disquieting.

Ozpin has experienced many things, over the millenia. The prospect of something entirely new, and dangerous, is jarring. He can't decide whether it's a breath of fresh air, or one more burden atop the rest. It's perhaps best not to dwell on.

"It sounds as though death is common here. What exactly are we facing?"

There are no Grimm, he's aware, but there are plainly other things that hunt. And broader dangers beyond that. If Oscar has witnessed death here, he must know what to be afraid of.

"Ah, hello, Sharona!" calls Franciscus, waving to the Absol. "And you as well, Vira-Lorr." At least there's some familiar faces here-makes things a little easier to deal with.

"They are, though they are quite bad at it. It was quite easy to deduce that this was no real monster in any way."

[Franciscus does notice the person coming up behind him in time to not be too startled. He gestures at the bookcase.]

There's some suggestion that this could be moved. And oftentimes in fiction a bookcase conceals a passageway of some sort.

"Of course we are, even if we can't be there next to you we'll lend you every ounce of strength we can."

Somehow, someway, they knew when Usagi needed them. The could sense when she was on the very edge, seeing her cry like this made Makoto uneasy and it really kind of hurt. Wiping away some of the tears from Usagi's eye with a knuckle she smiled.

"How'd such a cry baby get to be the leader? We can take it, we're not saying that you can't be yourself, but you can tell us when you need help or when something's getting to be too much."

[He nods, thoughtful for the moment and staring at it. That is true. He doesn't read mystery often but the one or two times he did there was usually some kind of mechanic similar to that.]

I can...try?

[Left hand is kinda useless but he still had the right fully function at least. As he looks over the books to see if there's a mechanism or if he should be using brute force he glances at Franciscus.]

Are you feeling okay?

"What like from the movies? Is there even an ocean anywhere near here?"

Because wow, a giant monster attacking was a lot different to handle than a bunch of ghosts, storms, and dollhouses. But how cool would that be, maybe they could get giant mechs, or find a way to become super giant themselves. She'd already been shrunk so it had to be possible.

That gets a snort. "He really is the most shameless person alive." He sighs. "I can't just convince you to keep your mouth shut and not mention me to anyone for like, t'ree days Non?" He realises he's stalling.

"Okay, okay. Wes and Grady - they're humans, the barber and pawn shop guy respectively. Wes is tall and blonde and Deaf. Grady is short and dark, bearded. Both are handsome, naturally."

He pauses outside, inhaling the autumn air. He casts his gaze sidelong at David. "You're going to judge me," he says. "Kurt and Logan."

There was obvious relief in her features when he recognized Sharona. Both of them seemed pleased to see him, and that he remembered them at the same time. It was good to see old friends, even if Deerington was an awful place.

As her Absol preened, she smirked. "They're better at it sometimes, but I think this one is just a kid," she said, smiling down at them. "What do you say we let them go with a stern reprimand and steal their mask?"

You're sure? How can you be sure? What if it doesn't go back to normal?

[ Are they going to become dolls now? Oh, she's so tired of danger and uncertainty. She was ready for a life of peace and quiet, and maybe that's a lofty hope for a queen to have, but she's allowed to dream. Right? ]

[ It'd be impossible for him to miss the fear in her voice, no matter how she tried to cover it up. Kristoff didn't go straight for searching because of it, instead taking the time to place a hand gently on her arm after she pulls away from holding his hand. ]

I'll start moving the heavier furniture. You look at the walls and windows, see if there's any sign that they can open for us.

[ He squeezed her arm firmly, trying to ground her on top of the comfort. ]

[ The sudden shift in topics is a little jarring, to be sure, but Ford can take it in stride when it means Fern's going to show off an array of neat talents and weapons for him. The crossbow in particular gets an approving nod from Ford. ]

A prudent choice. I've always found crossbows more reliable than any of the alternatives. The reusable ammunition is handy as well.

And mundane weapons are useful against the creatures here?

Kristoff had woken up in the other bedroom not too long ago, but had had the opposite reaction in which he'd gotten up and started looking for a way out as quickly as possible. He'd tried each window, tried to find a seem in the wall or hinges, and when all else had failed, he'd checked the hall. Then the bathroom. And now he was downstairs, opening cupboards and pulling at books on shelves, doing anything he could to see if there was some exit that might be hiding from him.

He's gotten to the point where he's definitely frustrated, grumbling to himself up until he hears another voice. It makes him go quiet, trying to decide if they sounded dangerous, but they seemed just as concerned about him as he was of them.

"Unfortunately." He raises his voice loud enough to be heard through the living room. "In the kitchen."

Girl, you've got no idea. [ The words come out with a chuckle behind them, a shake of her head. ] I mean, not everyone is awful, but... Enough that it made the place feel like hell.

[ Her brows definitely raise further when she says Hans tried to kill her and she lets out a low whistle. ]

Damn. Talk about vindication. I hope you kicked his ass.
