[ Song Lan makes a quiet sound of acknowledgment at the first comment. He's quiet as the other continues. There's a part of him that wants to know -- to understand it. ]

[ Song Lan confirms, his brow still furrowed. ]

[Xue Yang feels his heart skip a beat at the agreement. He had almost been expecting the other man to deny it! But no. His A-Lan is honest.]

My robes are soft and clean. I took a bath earlier too.

[He raises his good hand, holding it out for Song Lan to touch.]

It's okay. I would never hurt you.

[ Song Lan's eyes drop to the other's hand. He wants to scoff at how can he believe it when the other has hurt him before, has hurt so many people but the words remain unspoken.

His hand uncurls from a fist but it curls back up after a few seconds of trying to convince himself to reach out for the other's hand. His jaw tightening. ]

A-Lan... [His voice is soft and hopefully comforting. With a careful step forward, he closes the space between them and peers into Song Lan's beautiful eyes.] May I touch you?

[ Song Lan doesn't relax as the other steps forward but he doesn't make a move to step away from him either. His eyes are drawn back up from where he'd been staring at the other's hand. The question catches him off guard even if one should have expected it. His heart is racing and there's a sense of anxiety growing.

Even with all that he gives a slight nod. He is curious, he wants to know. He wants to understand. ]

[Poor Daozhang. Xue Yang understands the fear to a certain degree. He has been beaten to a pulp and used more times than he can count! He just...adapted...to it differently than Song Lan.

His fingertips lightly brush against the other man's cheek, tender and sweet.]

It's okay. Nothing will ever hurt between us.

[ Song Lan uses all of his willpower not to flinch away from the touch but while there's something pleasant almost there the typical discomfort at being touched, the fear of it, the fear of being made dirty is rising in his throat.

How do you know? is on the tip of his tongue but he doesn't speak, his voice would betray him. Instead, he just keeps his eyes on Xue Yang and he allows the touch to continue. ]

[Fear is something he knows intimately. Xue Yang shifts his hand just a little to press his palm to Song Lan's cheek. He lets the warmth of their skin touching sink in, giving the other man a small smile.]

I was a kid the first time someone really beat me. I was dragged into the street by my hair and whipped. Then a cart was driven over my hand.

[ Song Lan's breathes in sharply when the other's palm presses against his cheek a fuller sensation of touch and he swallows. ]

Why are you telling me this?

I thought it might help if you knew a little more about me? [The reactions encourage him to stay still, his hand not moving an inch.] You were an orphan too, weren't you?

[ Song Lan's eyes lower, the second question nearly had him pull away. There are quite a few things he doesn't like to talk about, his childhood is very high on that list. ]

Yes, that's right.

[ He answers, pushing himself to look back up into the other's eyes. ]

It's okay. [He murmurs, brushing back some of the hair at Song Lan's temple.] I wish we could've met back then. I would've driven you crazy.

[He has always been a tad...energetic.]

You drive me crazy now.

[ And not just with anger anymore, he’s driven mad with the conflict inside himself when it comes to the other, with the fact that he is allowing Xue Yang to touch him despite the discomfort that’s growing.

He lets out a shaky breath, but he stays there, doesn’t push him away just yet. ]

A good kind of crazy? [Is there such a thing? There must be or the best side of Xue Yang wouldn't exist! ~~Right?~~ He leans forward and presses his lips to Song Lan's cheek.]

[ Song Lan almost says no but something stops him. He's not sure anymore. He's especially not sure when the other's lips press to his cheek and it's a brief warm feeling before the anxieties push to the forefront and he finally takes half a step back away from the other. ]

I don't know.

[This is...progress. He softens and gives the other man a sweet smile, letting him have his space. See? His A-Lan is welcome in his arms, but he can also put space between them. Both are fine. He just wants him to be comfortable.]

I won't hurt you. Ever.

I don't know how to believe that.

[ Song Lan feels confused at himself that he wants to believe it. ]
