Welcome to April's Test Drive Meme! This month's Test Drive's theme is: ENCHANTMENT HORROR.

All Test Drive Memes contain at least one clue to the Deerington's upcoming in-game events for the month! Keep your eyes peeled! But...not literally.

Characters may die during TDMs, but you do not need to count it towards a game-canonical death unless you want to. Consider it a freebie. All TDMs can be considered game canon as TDMs introduce minor aspects about the world of Deerington that can be revisited by characters later on in the game. You may also use TDMs for your application writing sample as well as AC.

YOU UNCULTURED SWINE

Pork is on sale!! Time to buy it up for all your family meals. It also means anything with pork in it in all of the restaurants is on special and super affordable for just about anyone. New arrivals can even get a free meal of bacon, sausage and eggs at the diner! Seeing all the low prices, you find yourself craving pork more than ever. But who doesn't love bacon, right? Maybe you had ham and pineapple pizza at Peter's or those delicious and mouthwatering pork dumplings at the Hot Pot. You could have cooked a nice pork loin with your friends and family for a large get together. Candied bacon is a real treat to munch on in the park!

You're cooking it yourself or getting it from the local restaurants, so nothing bad could happen with a little self-indulgence, right? Just about everyone has learned not to trust the food at a giant feast in Deerington, but short of the lunch and dinner menus at the diner, the restaurants and the grocery store have never done a Sleeper harm! At least, that's the way it's always been before. Two years is long enough to start taking things for granted.

Anyone who has any of the specials from the restaurants or who cooks any kind of pork related product at home will find that once they have finished their meal, they will slowly turn into... pigs. It seems to vary on how fast a single person turns, some moving slowly over the course of days while they eat more and more food, and others will turn into a full blown pig in a manner of minutes. At first you can still talk to others and display your usual personality in pig form, but the longer you stay a pig, the more boarish you'll become.

So how do you break the curse? Locals say there's a magic stream up on the mountain that will stop these kinds of enchantments, but you can't go alone. Someone will have to carry you up and sing to you while you drink. It might be a friend or a lover or a complete stranger, but whoever you can nudge into it will have to physically carry you in their arms up the side of the mountain looking for this stream. It can take a while— the walk is fairly long, a few hours at best, but you'll know it when you find it. The stream sparkles unnaturally in the sunlight and it seems like none of the animals are willing to drink from it's unnaturally cold waters. The moment you take a long sip while your companion sings whatever song pops into their head, you'll turn back into a human. Hopefully your clothes turn back with you.

If your character does not eat meat/pork, then they'll be safe from this event!

GOOD ENDURES

Mirror mirror on the wall...

The pork doesn't seem to be the only enchanted object around Deerington this month. There are several of them cropping up all over the place and each one has a different outcome for those unfortunate enough to run into them.

Spinning wheels seem to be in the most random of places. Some of them will even just appear in your house. Sometimes multiple spinning wheels show up. Anyone who gets to close will have the strong urge to prick their finger on the spindle, the needle very easily cutting the tip and making you bleed more than you might have expected. Hopefully you have a first aid kit around.

Anyone who pricks their finger will find that they are forced to follow the next person they see around everywhere. They'll follow them to work, to school, to the bathroom, to the kitchen, even to bed. It doesn't matter if it's someone you've never spoken to in your life, you will follow them like a lost duckling every hour of every day. It's enough to drive anyone bonkers.

Mirrors will also suddenly be being displayed in every home and every shop, even if you never had them before. It doesn't matter whether or not you have a reflection, any person who looks into the mirror will find that they are forced to imitate the next person they make eye contact with. This can be their personality, their posture, the way they speak, their basic movements— you'll start to become a total mirror image. If it goes on too long, you might even start to find the two of you start to look more and more alike...

Apples start to pop up in all the stores as well as in your fridges. They're bright red and look so delicious, you can't resist taking a bite. Even if you don't like apples or are normally allergic to them, you'll want to eat these, and you'll find they taste delicious and don't bring harm to anyone. At least... not at first.

A few hours after eating the apple, you'll start to notice differences in your appearance. Your hair has start to thin and become gray and limp, your skin is wrinkled and covered in spots, your hands become frail and shaky. You're aging, and rapidly at that. Before you know it, you've turned into a hideous hag, one that would frighten children in any fairy tale book. But how do you reverse it?

The cure for all three enchantments is to tell three facts about yourself. Even just introducing yourself will show improvement if it's to someone who never knew your name before. Those who ate the apples will have to seek someone out, but anyone who pricked their finger or looked in a mirror will specifically have to confess these three facts to the person they're enchanted to follow/imitate. Once three facts have been shared, you'll be able to leave, return to normal, and age back to your regular self.

Character Arrival

You can read how all characters arrive in Deerington here.

There is not a collective "all these characters showed up at the exact same moment" occurrence in Deerington. Since characters fall asleep, die, or pass out at various times throughout all their worlds, it wouldn't make too much sense if they arrived in game all at the exact same time. There should be some discrepancy between character arrival, whether by a couple minutes, hours, or even days up to a week.

The players are entirely in control of how/when they want to play their characters arriving in Deerington. For TDMs, you can play it like your character has just arrived and that can be maintained as your game canon, or you can wait until game events for that moment. Or you don't need to acknowledge it at all. The flexibility for character allows a bit more of an organic feel to the character arrival situation, so please play it to whatever feels right for you.

[At first, Javi thinks he's still dreaming. He's smelling honest-to-God pork, which can't possibly be a real thing. He follows the smell and sees so much food. This is definitely a dream, or a hallucination, or something. This just can't be possible.

And it's free?! Javi actually pinches himself to make sure he's awake. It's so damn tempting to just grab a plate of everything, but one does not live for years in the apocalypse without being cautious of so much food just sitting there. He gets the attention of someone close by]

[It's been nine months since Louis arrived in Deerington- nine months since he's seen anyone from his own world. Sure, he had Clem and Michonne in Wonderland, but that was a longass time ago. He'd given up on seeing anyone even vaguely familiar here.

He doesn't know Javi, but he recognises the face instantly. He knows he ran with Clem for a while, she told him so, but for now, he's going to settle for vibrating excitedly because an honest-to-god famous person is here.]

[Martin fumbles a bit with his own device. He'd been comparing it to his mobile, and now... there's a person.]

[He has no idea why this person would, but it's worth asking.]

Richard Strand | The Black Tapes

[This can't be easily explained by a shared delusion. Whatever is going on here is a mystery that makes Deva Corp look like a children's television show, which makes him wary. Consequently, he hasn't been the most social being, but he cuts an unusual figure because he is still dressed in the suit he ended up in here, adjusting his glasses and sitting on a park bench to read his phone. Typing on it. This place at least provided a notebook and a pen, so he's taking notes.

He really does cut an unusual figure in his rich dressings, and staring intently at the locals and new arrivals passing probably doesn't earn him any favors either. Should anyone approach him he'll just meet their gaze calmly and shrug.]

I'm trying to decide we're all delusional. Don't mind me.


B) Uncultured Swine |

[Pig is easy to cook. Bacon especially. But given that he's been shanghaied here he's wary of different kinds of meat by nature. He's wary of food here, but he has to pick something to cook. So initially he'd selected hamburger meat. Easy to freeze, easy to cook. - He's glad he did because he's just lucky enough to see somebody eating those dumplings and end up squealing, cloven hooves kicking in the air.

That-

That should not happen. These things however can be easily explained by a number of things - infection, disease, Or perhaps that person was from one of these other so-called universes. Standing out in front of the Hot Pot, he's surprised when a Second person just sort of starts swelling in place before squealing and again, flopping over.

People don't just...eat things and turn into animals. That's physically impossible.. Delusions. This screaming was nothing.

Amid the chaos he sets his own purchase carefully down, studying the scene and just - trying to puzzle it out because this is...]

Obviously.

[His tone is edged with nerves - that anyone who passes by might be able to hear.]

There's something else at work here. This-

[It's instinctive however when he seeks someone pace by with something he knows is pork related. He slaps it out of their hands.]

Don't eat that! not until we can figure out what kind of food poisoning is affecting these people.

[One of the pigs makes a bid for his groceries and he picks it up quickly out of their way.]

[Alex Reagan is normally a food picker by nature. She's particularly bad at taking care of herself sometimes, so she largely lives on a diet of scavenged foods from the break room at the studio and a large quantity of takeout. However, she is not an idiot, and she's familiar with the stories about eating food in a strange place. Memories of Persephone and her pomegranate pims, Odysseys and the lotus and everything that she'd ever heard about the fae are etched in her mind, so she's been trying to avoid the things that are offer to her.

Even if they do smell really damned good.

Good sense has never been her primary personality feature (or a second, or a third or a... whatever) so what little she has has been starting to go with the cloying delicious smell of the pork around her. Alex had just been on the verge of accepting an offered sausage before she catches a familiar voice, even if it's not addressed to her. There's no mistaking the sound of the voice of Richard Strand, especially if you're as familiar with it and has heard it as many times as Alex has. She'd not only heard it in person, but in the way that she'd edited the episodes, and had listened to the recordings of it when he'd been gone for six months.

'Apophenia' she had heard it in her head when she'd first woken up here, a scoffing sound at the idea of being in some sort of different world. It wasn't enough to stop her believing in it entirely of course, but it had helped Alex to keep some of herself separate from giving into the world completely. At least mentally anyway. But now it was here, and when she turns, she can see him standing there. He's always towered over her physically (a foot of height difference was a bitch) but now he's like a beacon, a light house to a stormy sea.

Maybe if he's here it can't be as bad as she thinks it is.

Despite knowing that Richard's not a hugger, despite how their relationship had only just been patched by a confession over a few drinks on a long night after one of the longest days of her life, Alex just throws herself into his body and hugs him for her life. Even if it hasn't really been all that long since she'd seen him.]

I. Arrival
[It's second nature to try to disappear into the background as Martin explores his new surroundings. There's safety in anonymity, in being little more than soft steps on the pavement, a forgettable face in the crowd. He's aware this isn't the healthiest tactic to take, but this place is strange, old-fashioned, and just a little uncanny. Not in the same way as the Stranger--the Circus--but it's still unsettling.

There's a new 'ghost' in Deerington and he's-]

[There's a dog! An adorable dog that seems to be carrying some sort of package. Or letters? Oh, no, it's too cute, and he is absolutely going to follow it. So, there's now a much less subtle young man, jogging along with a dog trying to talk to it and let him pet it.]

Where are you going? Off on some ruff business? Such a good girl!

II. Spinning Wheel
[Ow. Ow! That hurt. Martin is scowling to himself and sucking his finger where he's just pricked it on the spinning wheel. Why did he do that, exactly? It feels very... Web. At least as far as it seems like from the Statements about that power that he's read. Maybe a little like that time he'd felt like he ought to pile tape recorders onto the coffin? This seems much less benign. Especially when he glances at someone and immediately changes direction to start following them.

It's not really intentional to stalk a stranger, but... here he is.]

no but seriously, when sunny drags himself metaphorically down to earth long enough to realize he's actually being followed, there's a disoriented moment in which he thinks it must be michael in like.. a different shape? but that's stupid and doesn't make sense. his second thought is that this place is full of scary dangerous people and it's getting dark he's probably about to be murdered. then he gets a look at the supposed-weirdo following him and. he's kind of. harmless-looking? not what he'd expect of a mugger or axe-murderer.

then he remembers the spinning wheels, and his own unfortunate experience with one.

so he slows--sunny's about the width of a pencil, but he has long legs and a long stride--then stops altogether when he finds a good spot to do so. there's a pencil stuck through his messy bun, a sketchpad under his arm, and a slightly flustered, amused smile quirking his lips. ]

[After March's cult explosion Fern is, understandably, a little wary of wandering around town alone. Not that he can't handle himself, but the townspeople attacking emotionally compromised people with mallets is as good as reason as any to be on edge. That feeling is only amplified when he realizes someone has started to follow him, and it only takes him a couple minutes of this before he can't take it anymore.

He spins to face whoever-this-is, a whistling noise resounding in the air as he forms a sword out of one of the blades of grass in his palm. This guy looks like a Sleeper but he jabs the weapon in his direction anyways, fully willing to stab him if necessary.]

Dude! If this is an ambush you're real bad at it!

one minute the guy's human, happily picking away at his plate of bacon, and then, out of nowhere, he's not either of those things. human or happily munching on his... oh. )

( that's the sound of all that just happened clicking into place. immediately followed by the rumble of her stomach. hungry as she is, and dude is she hungry, there's no way she's going to chance turning into a pig and possibly being used for government experiments.

Let it be known that Tony likes food. It doesn't matter what kind of food it is, whether it's pizza, burgers, or just plain old pork on a stick. Well, pork in any form is fine with him. So naturally, he follows his nose and comes across a veritable feast of pork.

There doesn't seem to be anyone dictating who gets to eat and who doesn't, and besides: he's in a restaurant. "No one minds if I just dig in, right?" He pauses for about five seconds as if waiting for an answer. When nothing comes within that timeframe, he doesn't waste anymore time waiting and just takes a bite of an impressively sized pork chop.

[The first thing he sees

which is in itself bizarre in the sense that it shouldn't happen, it shouldn't

is the tattoo. He contemplates how much he'd lack in coordination if he were to lose his right hand. Maybe just lose the thumb and index finger and the fleshy part that shows off the ink under his skin like some cruel joke. The thought that he's having the thoughts (it makes sense, he swears) is what ultimately jars the idea out of his head. He remembers the dream, the deer, the warmth of his blood. Dying. He remembers dying. Was he supposed to? His clothes- the all-black and flak jacket- are drenched in red, but lack the... tears. Neji supposes there were supposed to be tears. And his wounds aren't exposed, much less open, much less bleeding, but the scar tissue was horrible and soft and tender.

Sodder said 'Get Over It', apparently.

He finds a change of clothes. His clothes. He changes, and braves to slip outside. The world is different. Of course it is. He'd died. And now he was

smelling pork, seeing feasts laid out, being invited to share in the festivities and food. Genjutsu? Maybe. He's too exhausted to care to dispel. He's starved. When had he last ate? There's dumplings amongst strange food. He's starved.] I doubt I could pay. [But the vendor grins, enlightens him. And suspicion be damned, a loud and empty stomach was embarrassing--] No, I shouldn't, I'm [--] Is there anything lighter to eat here, today?

Mirror, Mirror

[One mark, one life. That was how it went, right? He'd been in such a

haze, he supposes, upon waking up. He'd just wanted his blood off of himself, he'd just wanted to see if his body was

He looks no worse for wear-- a few days at war, in need of proper grooming, like he's hiding a sour wince with every movement. Off-white robes, free of blood. A Leaf village headband. He'd just have to remove that headband he'd been so quick to place on himself back in that room where he'd woken. He moves to remove the cloth-- it would be quick. Painless. Like several things he can't

someone's behind him, and Neji's quick to make eye contact through the mirror. And then he drops his hand, because the person behind him isn't raising their hands to their forehead. He doesn't know that's the reason why just yet but

[ Chloe had mostly just been going out for a coffee, because why wouldn't she? She's avoiding the pork flavored everything on the sheer principle that anything Deerington offers at a discount probably can't be safe, and she's fueled by caffeine, nicotine, and THC on a regular basis. She had just been about to go to what was usually her favorite spot when she'd unintentionally seen the guy hanging out by the mirror. Mostly it was the get up that had caught her eye, but now he's... turning?

Why is he turning?

Chloe notices he seems about as chill in posture as she is, but given how he'd been a second ago, that feels off. Really it feels off that he's even looking at her at all, but what is she supposed to do? There's an awkward silence that lasts about as long as she can take it which is in reality really not that long because Chloe detests silence. ]

Arrival

If anyone ever wondered what a sort-of freaked out teenager looked like, well, they probably wouldn't have to look too far. Sure, this all looks normal enough, but one minute, Blaine was in Ohio, and then he found his way to Wonderland, and somewhere in all of that, he found himself in Maine. It's weird to say the least, and he's not entirely sure what to make of it.

He's in what looks like a park, but it's also a park he's never seen before in his life, and he's not completely certain how he got here. Still, he's not going to learn anything by standing around staring, so he does the one thing that makes sense: get walking and try to get his bearings somehow. Maybe if he's lucky, he'll meet someone who knows what's going on, where exactly they are, and what they're supposed to be doing.

This place doesn't look too bad at first glance, but then again, Wonderland didn't either, and now he knows all too well that appearances can be deceiving. Maybe if he's lucky, this place is lacking in the hellhounds department. One go-around there was more than enough for him.

So, that just clears things up a bit: first order of business is getting to know the place, and the second is finding a friendly face who doesn't mind answering a newcomer's questions, because Blaine definitely has a few of those.

Apples

So, there's a lot of things that are weird about this, such as suddenly finding himself in Maine, of all places. Even if this is so very far past weird and into bizarre territory, it's actually not all that weird considering that he's been to Wonderland and seen and dealt with a lot of crazy things there.

But this isn't Wonderland, and those sure are some delicious looking apples. And, well, he's hungry, and apples are supposed to be healthy. So he doesn't hesitate to pick one up and take a fairly large bite out of it. "Man, I thought I knew what good apples were, but this takes the cake."

He's just going to go on his way down the street munching on his apple, already feeling like his mood is lifting. And considering that it wasn't that bad before, that's saying something.

He might even be whistling a happy tune as he walks along, completely unaware that maybe that the apple might not be as innocent as he assumed it was. There might be a fleeting thought in the back of his mind to not take this at face value, but- it's an apple. What could possibly go wrong there?

There isn't much for MacCready to do but try and get a lay of the land. There's no time to scream or cry about his weird displacement. He's got his rifle at least, which is now slung over his shoulder and probably looks so out of place with his size, but no more than his clothes — military garb fit for an adult, but fixed in some places that while he swims in it it's wearable. Weirdly enough while he has some spare ammo on him a lot of the things that were in his over-sized pockets before are now gone. Great, not only was he nabbed but someone took his shit too?

He slides his rifle off his shoulder and opts for holding it just in case, and the next time he sees someone he's approaching with a confidence and demand that only a twelve year old with a gun could muster.]

You! [He won't point his gun...not yet, but he carries with a demeanor that says he's not afraid to use it. Because you know, he's just so intimidating, this child.] Tell me what's going on.
