Spiritwalker Plot Post (for early May)
(ETA: Log is here!)
Sometime in early May, an influx of spirits from other worlds will suddenly be pouring into Deerington.
To the untrained eye, they’re invisible. But spiritually-sensitive sleepers might notice ethereal, incorporeal creatures moving through town. And that these spirits are moving with the desperation of somebody who’s drowning and groping for a life raft.
SOMETHING is drawing them toward a singular point, like a moth to a flame.
Having tumbled into a completely different plane of existence, these spirits need something to anchor themselves to: A beacon whose essence is connected to plants, animals and the elements.
Anyone tracing these spirits' movements will discover said beacon: The Spiritwalker, a creature made of spiritual energy (similar to the Nightwalker in Princess Mononoke) — constantly in flux, highly unpredictable, and very dangerous to anybody who encounters it.

Examples of shapes this form may take
Regardless of form, the creature always has:
Anyone who's met a certain half-elf druid (
spiritwalks) might put two and two together, and realize the following: Vyng is the Spiritwalker. And he's no longer in control of himself.

➤ Possible ways your character can be involved or affected:
A. As a victim who gets:
- Possessed by animal spirits (with or without Vyng's direct influence)
- Hurt or killed by the Spiritwalker directly
- Physically pulled into the Spiritwalker's form, temporarily losing their identity as their will is subsumed by countless spirits
(Note: Getting pulled inside can involve either your character fighting their way out, or we could work something out where Vyng helps them regain their individuality somehow.)
B. As a fighter who wants to hurt or kill the Spiritwalker. Killing it will involve:
- Incapacitating Vyng's partner Tuck (
bardbarous), a 7-foot axe-wielding barbarian who's protecting Vyng with the fury of the sun
- Destroying Vyng's crystal "heart" embedded inside the creature
(Note: Claire is open to having Tuck get hurt or killed, if anybody wants to go this route.)
C. As a fighter who wants to help Vyng...possibly by doing something like:
- Fighting alongside Tuck, protecting the Spiritwalker from other people (and/or other people from the Spiritwalker)
- Going on a suicide mission with Tuck to take Vyng down themselves (IF enough people have died or gotten hurt to justify the Mercy Kill option, and nobody's slated to kill Vyng themselves)
D. As an ally trying to find a peaceful way to bring Vyng back to his senses.
(Note: This is open to discussion/plotting! One possible idea is neutralizing his powers somehow, but I'm down with discussing other ideas.)
If one or more of these options are of interest to you, comment under the appropriate thread below!
Note: You are TOTALLY free to toss your name in the hat for more than one "role" (i.e. your character gets hurt, and then decides they want to try killing the Spiritwalker)

Examples of shapes this form may take
- Giant bipedal creature
- A dragon
- A herd of stampeding animals
- A windstorm
- Billowing thunderstorm clouds that can strike with lightning or drop acidic rain on people
- A large “tree” with an outstretched canopy. But on closer inspection, the outlines of leaves are actually the shapes of animal appendages, reaching out for…help? To pull other spirits into this “life raft”? Hard to say.
Regardless of form, the creature always has:
- A single glowing amethyst stone that changes shape and size, depending on the form
- A pair of three slash marks that vaguely look like fish gills

Victims getting hurt, killed, possessed, or forcibly pulled into the Spiritwalker's form

If you wanted, we could flip the script around: Michael actively helps Vyng regain his own sense of self. And as long as Michael is with him, Vyng can either slow down the creature's movements, or very briefly exert control over it.
What are your thoughts on this?

ooooh and I just had a thought, he could totally proc his amethyst for the first time while he's getting himself sorted out before he goes and finds vyng
no subject
In that case, it sounds like Michael's gonna:
- Get pulled into the mass of spirit energy
- Activate the amethyst, which potentially helps get himself sorted out
- Find Vyng, help him come to his senses
- Keep Vyng company for however long he can, until this mess gets sorted out
Does that sound about right?

Vyng could either help with that, or someone from the outside could come and try rescuing her. Or maybe a little bit of both!
Do you have any preference?

You know, since she hasn't gotten to meet Vyng yet, I'm all for him helping her there!

Rei actually is extra vulnerable to possession than the average person so THAT'S FUN. Here's an extra tasty treat of a vulnerable psychic, come and get it!

If she's closer to the Spiritwalker when it happens, it's possible one of the fighters can get her to safety.
If she's further away from the action, then hopefully she's got a buddy who can help bring her back to her senses!
Alternatively, we could try working something out where the Spiritwalker eventually draws the spirit out of her.
Do you have a preference? (Or any other ideas? :> I'm 100% down for whatever)

but also...I'm wondering if the SpiritWalker would try to step into her skin, since that's something that can happen in her canon. I'm not sure she'd be a good host for long, or if the spiritwalker would just try to slurp her up-
really any option is good because I'm here for the chaos.
Fighters who want to hurt or kill the Spiritwalker
Fighters who want to help protect Vyng (or protect others from the Spiritwalker)

She's got a can do attitude, a giant sniper rifle scythe, and super speed to pull people out of danger.
She's a giant monster fighter so odds are she'll probably be against it until she figures out just what's going on.
I'm also down to play her a victim to getting hurt, possessed or pulled in.
Pretty much just down to clown this looks fun.

Maybe they get into a fight, and Vyng briefly exerts control over the creature's form at one point? (Ruby should also have the amethyst pendant by then, which would make it easier to find his heart if she gets pulled in.)
Also, there's at least one victim who's gonna get stuck inside the spirit mountain. It's possible they'll need help from a fighter in order to physically escape.
ETA: And it sounds like Kyoko will be decidedly defending Vyng from the start, if you and Bunny are interested in coordinating something there
no subject
She'll protect other people too, but unless it's really dire she's not going to let anyone hurt him because gotta be a better way, she likes him way better than you, etc... She's just done with mercy killings man.
no subject
yyyyeah, I can deffo see why she'd take the protector role ;_; In that case, we've got several options. Kyoko can potentially:
- fight alongside Tuck
- clash against someone trying to fight against him (it sounded like Ruby was initially going to take that position, but I know y'all were talking about a team-up too)
- rescue somebody who's getting pulled into the creature
...Or anything else you might be interested in! Do you have any thoughts or preferences?

Right now, one of the biggest hurdles is probably making sure Vyng stays back.
Since there's no singular "source" of the spirits pouring into Deerington, and his body serves as a beacon for spirits to latch onto, they're still capable of dog-piling him again.

WHAT IF WE... PET THE SPIRIT MONSTER... it helped before!
I'm also down for this idiot getting himself banged up in his attempt

Shiro's grounding presence is gonna have a hard time reaching Vyng from the outside, since he's buried beneath so many spirits. Which means he very well might get slapped by a giant hand for his trouble instead.
SORRY SHIRO....

gets smacked across the city for his trouble

How would Med'an go about trying to communicate with it, do you think? Just to see if we can maybe riff off each other's ideas a bit before the actual thread :>
